CBD oil for cats

The cat is a stubborn animal. Try administering that regular CBD oil. That’s going to be tricky, because CBD oil for humans is rather bitter.

Fortunately, there is a good alternative for our meowing friends: CBD oil specially made for cats.

Fish oil instead of hemp seed oil

CBD oil is made by mixing a CBD extract (CBD paste) with a vegetable or animal oil.

Hempseed oil is usually used in CBD oils for humans. The advantage is that the whole product then comes from the same source: the hemp plant. However, the bitter taste is an important drawback.

CBD oil for cats therefore also contains fish oil. This could be sardine oil, herring oil or salmon oil. After all, it is common knowledge that cats love fish. So no surprise there.

Low CBD concentration for cats

However, there is another difference between CBD oil for humans and CBD oil for animals: less CBD. The reason is related to the weight of a pet.

Depending on the length and width, an adult usually weighs somewhere between 60 kg and 90 kg. Do you know how much an adult cat weighs on average? Between 3.6 kg and 4.5 kg.

This much lower body weight means that a cat also needs much less CBD. For this reason, CBD oil for cats has a low concentration of cannabidiol (CBD). It contains 2% to 4% CBD.

CatsWhat percentage?

Our advice is:

2% CBD oil for cats weighing up to 2 kg.
4% CBD oil for cats weighing 2 kg or more.

Administering CBD oil

A common method of ingesting CBD oil is by dropping a few drops under the tongue. We do not recommend trying to get a cat to take CBD oil in this way. It’s a sure way to get a few sharp nails in your arm or a few sharp teeth in your fingers.

Tip: mix the correct number of drops of CBD oil into the cat food. Next, you do need to make sure that your cat eats all of that food. One way to achieve this is to give your cat just a little less food than normal. After all, this reduces the odds that your cat will leave some leftovers.

Shake before use

It is also wise to make sure that the CBD oil is at room temperature before mixing a few drops into the cat food. CBD oil that has just come out of the fridge does not drip as well.

It is also important to give it a good shake (5 seconds) first. This ensures that the CBD is well distributed throughout the fish oil. That way, you can be sure that the concentration of CBD is the same in every drop.

How many drops of CBD oil for the cat?

The guideline for pets is: 1 drop of CBD oil per 5 kg bodyweight. Since a cat almost always weighs less than 5 kg, you only need to give your cat 1 drop of CBD oil per serving.

Furthermore: a maximum of 3 servings per day. It is best to spread these moments as evenly as possible throughout the day: 1 drop in the morning, 1 drop in the afternoon and 1 drop in the evening.

By the way, if you’ve given your cat more CBD oil than indicated above, don’t worry. CBD is not a psychoactive substance and your cat cannot possibly get high from this form of cannabis oil. There are no other known adverse effects of cannabidiol (CBD), either.

THC oil for cats

That is not the case with THC oil for pets. With THC oil, there is a risk of a high.

However, if CBD oil doesn’t have the desired effect on your cat, that may be a reason to try THC oil. Be very careful, a cat weighs much less than a human and the risk of a high is therefore greater.

So choose THC oil with a low concentration of THC and never give your cat more than 1 drop of THC oil per serving.
